Crete is an island rich in pictures, sounds, flavors and fragrances, with roots in
the distant past. The first European civilization, the Minoan Civilization (2700
– 1500 BC) flourished here more than 4000 years ago.

According to the Greek mythology, king Minos was son of Zeus (the father of the ancient
Greek Gods). Zeus fell in love with Europe, the daughter of the Phoenician king Agenor
and in order to charm her, he was transformed into a white bull and persuaded her
to sit on him. Zeus kidnapped Europe this way and carried her across the European
continent, before they finally came together to Crete to get married there under
a tree in the city of Gortys. One of the sons born after this marriage of Zeus with
Europe, was the well-known king Minos.
