Cretan civilization has developed through the times, from Antiquity up to the present
and is evolving, while keeping its specificity and uniqueness. There are many Cretan
personalities through history that played a fundamental role in determining the culture
of the island, and they have definitely left their traces in the modern era.
One of them was Domenikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco, the painter and
sculptor of Renaissance, who was born in Candia (the modern Cretan capital of Heraklion)
in 1541 and lived most of his life in Italy and Spain (Toledo), where he died in
